Academics - First Grade
In our first grade class we follow the Archdiocese curriculum guide in developing our lesson plans. We follow the Reading First Initiatives in which teaches children what good readers do when they do not know a word. They make predictions about stories and write their own stories. We have a 90-minute block of time devoted to literacy which includes reading groups for individualized instruction and literacy centers.
We also have 30 minutes to an hour of math a day. The math program incorporates many of the best practices of how children learn best — hands-on, repetitive and real world application.
Science and social studies are covered through thematic units. We learn about other cultures and about our own country.
Religion is a big part of a Catholic school. One major focus for first grade is learning about the mass and becoming familiar with prayers.
