Co-curricular Activities

Sport Programs

Thanks to a supportive parent Booster Club, St. Francis of Assisi offers a wide variety of athletic programs at no cost to students for league fees or uniforms. In addition, the "no-cut" policy ensures that everyone makes the team, even if it means multiple teams have to be formed. In this way, all students are encouraged to participate in sports, regardless of physical ability or financial situation. All sports are coached by parent, teacher, or parish volunteers. The following sports are offered if demand is present: baseball, basketball, cheerleading, cross-country, field hockey, football, flag football, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, track and volleyball. The Booster Club encourages all families to participate in the sports and in the Booster Club by giving out information at registration, explaining the program in the Parent-to-Parent Handbook, and making frequent announcements. There is nearly 100 percent participation of students in the sports program.

Organizations

The Student Council is the student governing body, which meets regularly to work on projects for the school. The council is structured by committees such as Environmental, Spirituality, Service, Athletics, Spirit and Publicity. Each committee plans its projects and makes the necessary arrangements. The Student Council sets the agenda for the monthly student assemblies and truly "runs the show" with little teacher direction. Sixth- and seventh-graders are eligible to run for officer or committee chair for the following school year, and all classes elect their class representative.

Academic Competition

Here at St. Francis of Assisi Academic Competition begins in the 4th Grade. We participate in two major leagues, the Catholic School Academic Quick Recall League (www.csalqr.com) and the Kentucky Association for Academic Competition, (www.kaac.com) Governor's Cup.

Fall competition begins with the Catholic School Quick Recall League for Middle School. The season is six weeks followed by a single elimination tournament. We have two divisions: a 6th Grade team and a 7th-8th Grade team.

The KAAC Middle School Governor's Cup has three levels of competition (District, Regional, and State) with both individual and team competitions. The team components are Quick Recall and Future Problem Solving (FPS, www.fpsp.org). Written Assessment (Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts and Arts & Humanities tests) and English Composition (on-demand wrting) are individual areas for students.

Middle School District is at the end of January-beginning February. Regional competition in mid-February, and State Finals in March.

The KAAC Elementary Governor's Cup has two levels of competition (District and Regional) with both individual and team competitions. The team components are Quick Recall and Future Problem Solving (FPS, www.fpsp.org). Written Assessment (Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts and Arts & Humanities tests) and English Composition (on-demand wrting) are individual areas for students.

Elementary District competition is March and Regional in April.

Book Bee is a quick-recall competition for literature for Grades 4-8. Students are required to read a given list of books appropriate for their grade level.

Miscellaneous

St. Francis of Assisi offers Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts when enough students show an interest. Parents volunteer to be leaders and a notice is sent out early in the school year to inform parents of sign-ups.

The honor of participating in the liturgy as a server or lector is an individual choice. The boys and girls of grades 5 through 8 are eligible to participate as servers and boys and girls in grades 6 and 7 can participate as lectors. Parent cooperation in this enterprise is essential.

The Booster Club, in conjunction with the school, hosts an annual awards night and awards trophies to all students who represent the school in competition—whether academic or athletic.
