Counseling Program
The SFA Counseling Program offers a variety of social and emotional services to all students and their families free of charge throughout the school year. These services include:
- Individual counseling
- Group counseling
- Family counseling
- Peace education, including PeaceBuilders, Familiae Pacis, Heartpaths, and No Bullying Program
- And additional programming based on the school community's needs.
The SFA Counseling Program helps children find success in school and life by:
- Supporting students by teaching skills for achieving success.
- Counseling with students to develop personal awareness and explore personal goals.
- Helping develop communication and interpersonal skills needed to relate well to others.
- Assisting children develop a better understanding and acceptance of themselves.
- Supporting children coping with family and life changes.
- Reinforcing parents understanding of their children's emotions, behaviors, and learning styles, and assisting them in meeting their child's needs.
- Developing and delivering classroom guidance lessons that teach skills such as making healthy decisions, resolving conflicts, and respecting others.
Children are often affected by issues daily and are not able to achieve at their full academic potential. The counselor's primary task is to help them become better learners by providing a comprehensive program that includes responsive services, individual planning, systems support and a guidance curriculum.
It is important for parents to understand that when your child and/or family comes to the Counseling Office, the interactions with the counselor are confidential except when laws or ethics dictate otherwise; and these specific cases will be discussed with your child and/or you during the first session. An information packet will be sent home for the parents to give consent for the counselor to see your child during school hours. In the event that the Counseling Program would want to obtain information from someone else or give information to others, (principal, doctors, etc.) you would be asked to give written permission in order for this information to be exchanged. No information, other than that pertaining to safety, would be shared if this is not signed.
