School Library
The library at St. Francis of Assisi is a busy place. Students in grades K through 6 visit weekly for classes that
- teach them to access information,
- expand upon topics taught in the classroom,
- provide literary enrichment,
- allow them time to borrow books or to take Accelerated Reader quizzes.
Seventh- and eighth-grade students do not visit the library on a weekly basis, but instead come on an "as need" basis to get books and resources. Since we are a small school, there are also plenty of available time slots for teachers to bring classes to work on projects that require library resources.
Special features of our library
- A mini-computer lab of ten computers where supervised students can access the electronic catalog, the Internet, or Accelerated Reader quizzes.
- A Smart Board, a computer-linked interactive white board, that can be used to demonstrate a variety of lessons to a whole class.
- A story area with steps is another nice feature of our library since it provides a great space for small group presentations.
Special events in the library during the 2006-2007 school year
- Guest speakers spoke with our students about the difficulties immigrants face and what is involved in becoming American as part of a "Becoming American" grant sponsored by the National Endowment For the Humanities and the American Library Association.
- Author Linda Hager Pack, whose book A Is For Appalachia provides a wealth of information about Appalachian culture, will visit and use that culture as a springboard for her activities with the students.
Our librarian is here Monday through Wednesday and Friday, and the library is open from 7:40 until 3:30 on those days.
